Here’s a list of the top dishes in New York. And with many restaurants in quarantine, they’ve cut back on deliveries to keep costs low. Try something new or treat yourself with these budget-friendly choices!

1. Coffee and bagels

Lots of people in New York drink iced coffee when they wake up, which makes for very large glasses. The ice will eventually melt but dilute the taste of your drink so it’s best to leave room at the top for ice or not drink very heavily. I’ve lived in New York for almost 3 years and never seen a coffee shortage. At every step there are Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Coffee Bean – and queues, especially in the morning. If you’ve ever wanted to explore your local area on foot, then this is the perfect opportunity. You can easily find a cafe with a rare or unusual coffee just by walking around!

Bagels are delicious and way more satisfying than other breakfast sandwiches – but you need some experience. Usually, cafe menus don’t have any pre-made bagels and they work on the “assemble it yourself” system. To make your pick, you will be offered 15 kinds of buns, 30 types of cheese, 10 types of fish and meat. Naturally, it would take a long time to make up your mind; so get ready! Saying “make me something classic” won’t work here – the seller will still have a million questions to ask.

2. Hot dog

New York wouldn’t be complete without a hot dog! It’s been one of the most iconic dishes of America for quite some time now. The city is filled with hot dogs but I want you to know that there is a fundamental difference between real and US-made hot dogs. In Ukraine a hot dog is usually a bun, sausage, fresh vegetables and sauce. In the USA, people usually just have a bun, sausage and dip..

I love to get the hot dogs that are sold at Natan’s. And it’s even better to enjoy them when watching a baseball game at Yankees Stadium! It’ll make you feel like a real New Yorker and make you think of all the wonderful things about America, like the taste of a delicious hot dog.

3. Burger

The first thing to consider when ordering a burger in the USA is its size. Very few burgers in Ukraine are available as large as those that are common in the United States.

The second addition to the burger: french fries, salad, and vegetables. It’s a whole American set menu.

You can enumerate for a long time where to try a real burger, and eventually realize that your favorite is sold on a small and unknown street in Brooklyn, in a diner run by an Indian family, as happened with me. I can also recommend burgers at Minetta Tavern or Shake Shack, which has restaurants all over town!

4. Burrito, tacos, guacamole

In America, Mexican food is very popular and they enjoy it without any adaptations (I’m talking about spiciness). Places selling burritos, tacos, guacamole dishes can be found all around New York. And while the most delicious burrito I’ve tasted in the Seattle seaport, New York also boasts an abundance of places with delicious Mexican food. One of them is Burrito Box Hell’s Kitchen which you’ll find on 9th Ave & 56th Street!

5. Salads

Let’s finish the article with a few more last things: salads! Even though the US is a country of fast food, it doesn’t stop people from staying healthy and only eating the healthiest food. Chose to buy salads at food trucks, supermarkets or groceries? I recommend you stop by Chop’t! I couldn’t be happier with the salads at this place, they offer both pre-made salads/”pick it yourself” options. The prices are very reasonable too. The only thing I regret about coming here is that now I want to try just about everything on their menu!

6. Steak

There are many different steak joints in New York, but it can be difficult to find one that is good without having to pay an arm and a leg. Unfortunately, steaks that are of lesser quality tend to be expensive while the better ones need some searching for. Furthermore, restaurants often include sides like fries or salad. They may even offer a chicken broth – which is already there))) And although I’m not a steak eater myself, I still recommend going to Keens Steakhouse for an unbeatable steak.

7. Rice with chicken or lamb

New York is a city that never sleeps. One of the most popular food trucks is especially popular with those who work at night.

This is a very simple & easy dish to make. It contains rice, pieces of chicken or lamb, salad, vegetables and sauce to taste. The dishes it can be served with are endless!k style!

8. Pizza

When I’m asked about pizza, my answer is always the same: “It may have been invented in Italy, but it is best made in New York!”

When living in a big city like New York, the number of options for eating is overwhelming. However, I recommend trying what is known as “chip-pizza.” It’s 1$ and tastes great! We offer $1 pizzas for those looking to save money or who want their one-hundredth slice of pizza. Remember, we also have cheese and pepperoni pies for $1.50

9. Gairo

If you’re missing shawarma and can’t seem to find any good substitutes in the US, try the American version of it called “gairo”. This Syrian variant of shawarma is made from a tortilla bread instead of pita bread. It is folded in half and then filled with veggies, meat, sauce and other delicious Syrian additions.

10. Falafel

If they came to Ukraine a few years ago, the dish is probably loved by a lot of people in America who have been following a plant-based diet for a long time. And even among the countries that were the first to adopt it (from which it originated) there’s a joke about how different people pronounce it. We say “gyoooza” but New Yorkers say “gwo-zah”.

The hottest falafel in the East Village & Greenvich village is at Mamouth’s Falafel and it’s delicious.
